Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the intermediate- to long-term results of total hip arthroplasties, using a Harris-Galante prosthesis, in patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
Materials and methods: Fifty-eight cases, in 51 patients, were evaluated. The mean follow-up was for 10, ranging from 6.2 to 13, years. Clinical and radiological evaluations, including polyethylene wear, were performed. The factors expected to be relevant to polyethylene wear were analyzed, and the endurance of each acetabular and femoral component analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method.
Results: Pelvic osteolysis was found in 3 hips (5%) and femoral osteolysis in 29 (50%). The average linear polyethylene wear rate was 0.14mm/year, ranging from 0.01 to 0.41mm/years. Five femoral and two acetabular components were revised. The mean survival probabilities of the femoral and acetabular components at 10 years were 84%, ranging from 73 to 92%, and 97%, ranging from 94 to 99%, respectively, using the Kaplan-Meier method.
Conclusion: The intermediate- to long-term follow up and radiographic evaluation of a primary total hip arthroplasty, using the Harris-Galante prosthesis, in patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head, revealed low
failure rates of the acetabular component, and relatively high failure rates of the femoral component, which was usually related to loosening and diffuse distal osteolysis.
